Words For Shelley

They say you can pick your friends but you can't pick your family
That wasn't true for Shelley
She picked us as her family

Shelley came into our lives the way she came into a room
Bold and fearless
Clomping her shoes and plopping down her handbag
And she never stopped

She became a part of us all
So much so we never questioned if she belonged
Of course Shelley belonged
Of course she belonged at our Thanksgiving dinner table
Of course she belonged at every Christmas gift exchange and every birthday party and anniversary celebration
and every Memorial Day and 4th of July barbecue

They say you can pick your friends but you can't pick your family
That was true for Shelley
She picked us as her friends

We met Shelley on her terms
Unapologetic and with a great big heart
Always with something to say and always with something from TJ Maxx
And she never stopped

She was there during the difficult times of aging parents and sick aunts and uncles
She was there during the happier times of weddings, graduations, and ice cream socials
And she was there when you just needed a watch battery

Shelley was there and she never stopped
And she will always be part of our family and will always be our friend
