Doris Hudgens

March 11, 1930 — August 29, 2016

Doris Lee (King) Hudgens of Glendale died Aug. 29, 2016. Following a stoic battle against cancer, she passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family. She was 86. Doris Lee was born March 11, 1930, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Lawrence Bryce "Mike" and Minnie Hornback King. She graduated valedictorian of her class in 1947 from East High School. On Sept. 25, 1948, she married Glenn Hudgens in Kansas City, MO. They would have celebrated their 68th anniversary next month. On March 24, 1960, they became the proud parents of a daughter, Denise. In 1988, they moved from Independence, Mo., to Arizona. Doris Lee worked as an executive secretary in Systems Engineering at Sears Roebuck from 1948 to 1960. After retiring, she and Glenn began volunteering at the Glendale Foothills Library, where she served for 17 years until her health prevented her from continuing. She and Glenn traveled extensively, having been around the world twice, visiting all seven continents and 101 countries. They were proud "grandparents" to four dogs, whom they cared for every day. She is survived by her husband, Glenn ; daughter Denise (Stefan) Babirak of Peoria; grandson Stefan Trey Babirak of San Antonio; and four grandpuppies. She was predeceased by both parents of Tucson, and her brother, Leo Dean King, of California. Doris Lee had a simple request in how she wanted others to remember her: "I was here. Now I'm gone. I was a good wife and mother, but not a very good cook." A private service for family is planned. Donations in Doris Lee's name may be sent to the Arizona Humane Society, Attn: Development Department, 1521 W. Dobbins Road, Phoenix, AZ 85041; or Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix AZ 85014.
