David Michael Fontana
January 14, 2023
David, 68, of Sun City, AZ, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2023, after a hospitalization for a diabetic emergency. David was born on August 29, 1954, to Nazarene and Dorothy Fontana (both deceased) in Phoenix, AZ. He will be missed by his loving wife, Kay Fontana, their children, Jason Fontana (Natasha), Jamie Galea (Carmelo), and Jessica Fontana, brothers Daniel and Douglas Fontana, sister Denise Cosgrove, and eight grandchildren: Kevin, Koby, Kaiden, Michelle, Caprice, Kaleb, Carmelo, Jr, and Isabella, all of which he loved immensely.
Growing up in Phoenix, David was in Little League and at 14, was chosen to be a bat boy for the Phoenix Giants. He was also a cadet with the Glendale Police Explorers Post. He graduated from Bourgade High School in 1972 and began his career as the 35th Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certified in the state of Arizona in the early 70s. He also spent several years in restaurant management, but then landed a job with KZGL radio as a sales executive. Due to his distinctive radio voice, he worked as a weekend DJ and was aptly named “Dewey, the Weather God” because of his love and ability to predict the weather on the air. He later returned to his passion in emergency services and became a certified emergency paramedic and firefighter in the 1990s. He started volunteering for Pinewood Fire Department in Munds Park, AZ and later became a captain. He also worked for Guardian Medical Transport in Flagstaff, AZ, and American Medical Response in Vancouver, WA. In addition to his fascination with the weather, his hobbies included music, fishing, traveling, and exploring new places.
